The Mark II design was based on a sketch sent to Gerber by Army Captain C. In 1984 a blackened blade variety was offered for the MkII (Model# 5707).

There is an "S" in the serial numbers of the stainless models. L6 (tool) steel was used for the blade up to about 1980, then Gerber switched to Stainless.
